春日山の麓にあり上杉謙信も学んだ越後の名刹・林泉寺

林泉寺は、新潟県上越市にある曹洞宗の寺院で、春日山城の麓にあります。越後守護代・長尾氏の菩提寺で、戦国武将の上杉謙信は幼少のころ林泉寺の天室光育和尚のもとで学問を学びました。境内の裏山には上杉謙信の墓（供養墓）や川中島の戦いの戦死者の供養塔などがあります。

アクセス　電車の場合はＪＲ信越線春日山駅から、市役所前通りを西へ徒歩２０分ほどになります。マイカーの場合は、北陸自動車道の上越インターチェンジから１5分ほどで、大型バス１０台・普通乗用車３０台駐車可能な無料駐車場が境内入口にあります。

林泉寺の御朱印

林泉寺の御朱印（300円）は、宝物館の入口で頂くことができます。林泉寺の境内は正面が本堂、左手が上杉謙信などの墓がある裏山の墓地、右手が宝物館となっています。宝物館に入るときに依頼しておけば、館内の寺宝をひととおり見て帰るときに受け取ることができます。この宝物館では、有名な毘の一字旗・龍の一字旗といった軍旗、上杉謙信愛用の酒盃、首桶など、数多くの展示物が見られます。

林泉寺の周辺の名所

林泉寺の周辺には名所・観光スポットがいろいろとあります。
「春日山城」は、戦国時代の名将・上杉謙信の居城であり、国指定史跡、日本百名城のひとつでもあります。築城の時期は不詳ですが南北朝時代にはすでに存在していたとされ、複雑な地形を利用した堅固な山城となっています。本丸跡は標高180メートルほどで、頸城平野や日本海が一望でき、途中の山道には空堀や土塁、直江屋敷（家臣の直江兼続の屋敷跡）、毘沙門堂（復元）などがあります。
「春日神社」は、「春日山城」の名前の由来になった神社で、奈良の春日大社の分霊を祀り、千年以上の歴史をもっています。春日山城の総鎮守として、上杉謙信も篤く崇敬していました。
「春日山神社」は、明治34年（1901）に童話作家・小川未明の父である小川澄晴が創建したもので、春日山城内にあります。山形県米沢市にある上杉神社から上杉謙信公の分霊を勧請したもので、日本の郵便の父といわれる前島密も援助したといわれています。隣接する春日山神社記念館には、上杉謙信の遺品などが展示されています。

林泉寺の歴史

林泉寺の案内板には次のとおり記載されています。

Rinsenji Temple

Rinsenji Temple is a famous temple of the Sohtoh Sect raised in 1497 by Lord Yoshikage Nagao, grandfather to Lord Kenshin Uesugi, who was charged with the job of assisting in maintaining peace and order in Echigo. He built it as the family temple for the Nagaos on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the death of his father, Lord Shigekage, on the site of an old temple to suppress rebellions in and protect Eppu (capital of Echigo) after purifying the site.
The first chief priest of the temple was the famous Rev. Don-ei Eou. Since, his religious successors continued to act as chief priest of the temple. Lord Kenshin studied under Koiku Tenshitsu, the 6th chief priest, and Shuken Yakuou, the 7th. He was a devout believer in the temple and the temple was at the zenith of prosperity during his reign.
While Kasugayama as the fortress of Eppu was in those days guarded by the Nagao Family who constructed a mansion where usually resided, Rinsenji at the foot of the mountain, as well as Shitokuji Temple (Rinzai Sect), the family temple for the Uesugis who were charged with the job of maintaining peace and order within the capital of Echigo, also thrived. However, it is only Rinsenji that has continued its history up to this day, without letting the light of Buddhism as preached at it be extinguished.

林泉寺
明応六(一四九七)年、上杉謙信公の祖父越後守護代長尾能景公が、父重景公の十七回忌にあたり、越府鎮護の古寺址を浄め、長尾氏の菩提所として建立された、曹洞宗の名刹。開山は名僧曇英恵応禅師。以来その法嗣が代々相続して行き、謙信公は六代天室光育、七代益翁宗謙に学んで、帰依あつく、隆盛を極めました。春日山は越府の要害として長尾氏が居館を構えて守り、山下のここ林泉寺は、府内守護上杉氏の菩提所至徳寺(臨済宗)と並んで、共に栄えたが、林泉寺は法灯絶えることなく、今にその歴史を語りかけています。
